04. Do you participate in this fandom (fiction, graphics, discussion)?

[personal profile] senmut gave me Valdemar, Green Gables and Stargate Atlantis

Valdemar
1. Completely by chance. I was at my local library around 2000, which at that time was about as antiquated as you could get - they had a computer database and they were just moving away from the card catalogue, which was still off to one side.

Instead of searching for things, I was just wandering around the stacks and ran into the Science Fiction section. The blazingly white Companion on the Arrows trilogy paperback covers drew me immediately, and after I thumbed through a few of the first pages (in the second book! *facepalm*) I a) realized I was reading the second book spoilers omg, and b) I not only wanted to check these books out, I wanted to own them and snuggle them and call them George, etc. etc.

So for the three weeks that I had them, I devoured them. And I lived in the world of Valdemar. I had the Heralds' Code taped to my closet door. I wrote (bad) fanfic in my journal about how my Companion jumped universes to come and get me, and no you can't see it, because I painstakingly erased it all and wrote over it.

I'm not officially part of the public arena of this fandom, but I developed a small circle of friends who were enthusiastic about it too and for a while we roleplayed Heralds and Companions, but the interest petered out, as we were all busy with other roleplays elsewhere.

2. Hm. I guess you can love the books and move on from fandom, yes? I've read all but the Gryphon books in the series and the offshoot Oath books and all of the short story books for sale; I've read them all many, many times. But the books are gathering dust on my shelf, for the most part, and I no longer actively participate anywhere. Valdemar is a dear series of books to me, and filled with fond memories.

3. Arrows of the Queen. I love that book even more than the Magic's Price trilogy. That book was written as if Mercedes Lackey sat down with my mum and designed me the perfect book as a Christmas gift. Talia's story about coming from nothing and learning the ins and outs of becoming a Herald and changing as a result of the events of the book, that's the kind of story I love.

4. I have no interest in writing fanfiction - not because I don't like the concept, but because this is a fandom where I would much prefer to read. The world is so vibrant and multifaceted (even if a bit cliche at times) that other people's fantasies in Valdemar are brilliant works of art, and I get enjoyment out of them rather than my own work.

Green Gables
1. To be honest, I couldn't even imagine a fandom for this. I was gifted a boxed set of six books as an adolescent, and bought the last few once I'd finished Anne of Ingleside. They're beloved books and I read them often, but I never considered fandom until I ran across someone roleplaying Anne (quite well, may I add) in a multifandom RP site I'd practically tripped over on my search for something else. I was already busy in other fandoms at that point, so it was a short leap from finding her being roleplayed to searching for fanfic - and several places revealed a treasure trove of fantastic work.

2. I'll never leave this fandom. There's nothing that could kill my enthusiasm for a certain imaginative redhead and her brood. I may not be terribly active, but I'm glad to know there are other people who share my love of Anne.

3. Anne of the Island is my favorite book. It's the love story of the series, in my opinion, where all of the fun crossed wires and arguments and declarations and reunions come into play. I have favorite chapters of that book. I also love it because it reminds me of college life, even if I wasn't as much of a social butterfly as Anne and her buddies. And I love Philippa. It's a crime to me that she and Anne only spend time together in this book. I wanted her to come with Anne to Glen St. Mary.

4. I would write if asked, but I have no pressing stories to tell about Anne and Co. myself. I love the writing style and I think I'm not too shabby at duplicating it.

Stargate Atlantis
1. I hated SGA irrationally. It - in my opinion - had just killed SG-1, and since McGuyver was in reruns, this was my only helping of Richard Dean Anderson. I was a Jack/Carter fangirl until the concept of Jack/Daniel became apparent to me, and now they're my SG-1 OTP. :D *cough* But back to SGA. So, I thought SG-1 was cancelled and was going to be replaced by this rank newcomer, and I resented it and refused to watch it throughout the first season.

That was before I found out about [personal profile] thefourthvine. Her fanfic and fanvid recommendations brought my attention to one important thing: McKay and Sheppard. I'm not too proud to admit that I eventually got into SGA for the slash, but I stayed for the plot. I fell in love with the characters and the concept, and for almost all of the series I faithfully sat my butt down on Friday nights at 9PM.

Then I discovered the livejournal community dedicated to [livejournal.com profile] mckay_sheppard, and for a time I participated there as well as the info community for writers looking for research help.

2. I've already left this fandom. I have a small cache of fanvids that I've kept, but the series itself killed my enthusiasm at the end and the fans seemed to be dissolving into crazy. The accusation that SGA writers were racist made me exasperated with the whole darn group of people, and it was shortly after that fiasco that I walked away. I refused to participate in a place where I could be judged for my pairing preference not because of said pairing's relationship onscreen, but because of the ethnicity of the characters I prefer to write about. When the series became a mockery of itself and they took Weir away and replaced her with Carter - a move that I will never not resent - it was the death blow.

3. My favorite episode is "Sateda," the fourth episode from season 3. Oddly enough, I SHOULD be squeeing over a John/Rodney episode but there's LOTS of those, and at this point I'd probably get them mixed up with fanfiction (My favorite episode is that one where John and Rodney stumble on that Ancient babymaking machine and accidentally give it their DNA and make a daughter and they don't even like each other that way... yet... owait) But the reason I love "Sateda" is because omg, RONON. That ep was the writers and film team and special effects artists cooperating to make an episode that is an entire action/adventure movie compressed into an hour including commercials. Ronon's sheer epic-ness comes through in that episode, and I was squealing like an idiot.

4. I've written fanfic for this series, and I do have stowed-away plans to write more, not that I'll ever touch them. I'm just really insecure about posting my offerings in a fandom already established with gah, tens of thousands of fics already out there.
