Dear 2011 Yuletide Writer...
Nov. 21st, 2011 11:00 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Just because you're reading this letter, you have my deep, abiding gratitude. Let's get this out of the way right now - you can totally relax, because I love ya, and I'm gonna love whatever you write. We've got a fandom in common, and that is epic.
If you're new to the madness that is Yuletide, welcome welcome, and I hope you stay! If you're an old Yuletide veteran, I clasp your metaphorical wrist in camaraderie. Whatever you write, what I ask first and foremost is that you have fun writing it! The things I mention here are only additional bits of information.
So, without further gilding the lily...
No Reservations
This was seriously my sleeper fandom. Most fandoms show up at your house in a nice sweater with maybe a rose and take you to dinner before you start putting out. No Reservations (for me, anyway) just walked up in its leather jacket with its cigarette and a Jamaican beer and said "NOW" and before I knew it we were banging like ferrets in a bathroom stall. And that's sort of my relationship with it up to this point - I go for weeks without it, and then watch about four hours of it in a night. I'll be frank, it's my drunk dirty pleasure. There's nothing in the world like half-listening to Tony maunder lyrically on in extended metaphors like this one, about family traditions in Nova Scotia or Khatmandu or wherever he happens to be for that 55-minute period, while sort of, mostly, or really smashed.
All you really need to do to tickle my fancy with a No Reservations fic is to toss Tony into the location of your choice and send him on an adventure, whether humorous, frightening, thought-provoking or sad. I love the style of his narration throughout the episodes - and if you want to try that, I'll love you even harder, but don't feel like you have to! Weird settings and destinations a plus! If you want to cross this fandom over with a fandom of your own choice, I'd love that too as long as Tony's the focal character. Take me on a tour of your favorite fandom landscape!
Additionally, if you feel wild'n'crazy, I am desperate to see a crossover with Alton Brown's Feasting On Asphalt. Slash would definitely be welcome but isn't necessary! More than anything with regards to this crossover, I just want to see Tony's personality clash with Alton's.

Sahara (2005 Film)
Man, this fandom is just never not going to be a dear favorite. Sahara and I have been through some rough patches, and parts of it are bittersweet now, but it's still got a solid place in my heart. It's a tragedy that more movies featuring Matthew and Steve as Dirk and Al couldn't have taken place - but maybe someday we'll have more Dirk Pitt movies! Cross your fingers!
This is a fandom where I'd love to read a pre-slash or Getting Together fic - although it's totally not necessary! The thing that draws me back again and again to Dirk and Al is their deep, abiding affection for and loyalty to one another. Both of them have their quirks, but Al can always trust Dirk to talk (or drive) them out of a sticky situation, and hell, if the talking doesn't work, Dirk knows Al's always got his back (and a bag of firearms). They're funny and snarky in the movie, and the chemistry between Matthew and Steve is just tangible the whole way through.
Any of the characters from the film are welcome too. I'm a big fan of Rudi Gunn and Admiral Sandecker, and hey, Eva ain't half bad. Send 'em on an adventure, get schmoopy, be funny, it's entirely up to you! I know I'll love whatever you do.
If you do decide to go for slash between Our Stalwart Heroes, though, I'm a sucker for First Time Fic. Just sayin'. ;)

Top Gun
Copied from my signup because it's relevant:
I can't help it. I ask for Top Gun every year, because I have hope! This movie is like comfort food for me, even with its obvious flaws. You're welcome to write whatever you like - gen, slash, het, whatever! I'll be pathetically happy with anything you choose to write.
My dream fic would contain slash, because seriously, there's not much more fun than arrogant, oversexed fighter pilots going at it against any available surface. My favorite pairings include Maverick/Iceman, Iceman/Slider, and Hollywood/Wolfman. I like Maverick/Goose, but I like to see them more as a really intense, devoted friendship, you know the kind? Where the guys are bleedingly in love with each other but not in bed together. BUT! All that said, don't feel like you need to write slash.
If you do decide to go the slash route, there's one sticky point for me - try and be sure to observe the fact that Top Gun was filmed in 1986, after the DOD released policy in 1982 effectively banning gay individuals from serving in the United States military. While blessedly, DODT was repealed this year, in the cultural period of this movie, getting outed would inevitably kill your career.
My favorite character is Iceman! Toss him in the fic and I'll be happy as a clam.
I also love technical details, right down to the nitty gritty. So if you're a Naval Air Force aficionado, HAVE AT IT! I will love you forever. Platonically, of course.
I'm cool with whatever timeframe you want to set it in. Before, during, or after the movie is all right with me! If you do decide to write about any of the pilots and their RIO, though, I'd love love love to see a pre-Top Gun story about how they met and what kinds of obstacles they had to work through in order to make it as partners. Slider's good at working with Iceman now, but surely Iceman isn't a peach to live with.

Thanks so much all over again for being my Yuletide Santa this year! You're awesome for participating, and it's folks like you who make sure we have this holiday exchange year after year.
Sincerely,
Scylla
P.S. If you want to know more details about me for any reason, you can potentially hit up
